Accumulation of excess amount of fat beneath the chin can give rise to a double chin appearance. In addition to being aesthetically unpleasing, it also gives an aged face look.
What is Double Chin?
Double chin results due to submental fullness secondary to accumulation of excess fat. This can result due to your genetics, weight gain, or as a part of the aging process.
What are the options for treating Double chin?
A double chin can be treated with liposuction or Deoxycholic acid injection (Kybella). At Dermosphere clinic, we offer both treatment options.
What is Kybella?
Kybella (Deoxycholic acid) is an injectable medication that is used to remove fat in the area underneath the chin. The treatment is FDA approved.
How does Kybella work?
The active ingredient is synthetic deoxycholic acid. Deoxycholic acid is a naturally occurring molecule in the body. The function of deoxycholic acid is to break down and absorb the dietary fat. When injected into the fat beneath the chin, Deoxycholic acid destroys fat cells and once destroyed, these cells can no longer store or accumulate fat. This results in a noticeable reduction in fullness under the chin, revealing an improved chin profile.
What areas can be treated with Kybella?
Kybella is an FDA approved treatment for submental fullness caused by submental fat. Treatment of the double chin using Kybella gives excellent results without the surgical intervention of liposuction. Off-label treatment areas include post-axillary fat (bulge of fat that occurs near the armpit), bra roll, etc.
What information do I need to tell before treatment?
You should give a relevant medical and personal history to our dermatologist. You should specify if you are taking any medications (especially blood thinners). It is best to stop alcohol and smoking before the treatment.
What will happen during the treatment?
After adequate counselling and discussing the treatment plan, our dermatologist at Dermosphere clinic will numb the area with a topical anaesthetic cream and/or ice. After that, the injection will be given in the desired region.
How is the recovery after the Kybella injection?
There might be some initial discomfort immediately after the injections but it is minimally painful and well-tolerated. Post-Kybella injection, you might notice that there is some swelling in the area which is because of the inflammation induced by deoxycholic acid. The swelling starts decreasing after 5-7 days. If you feel extreme swelling and pain, contact the Dermosphere clinic.
How many treatment sessions will I need?
The number of treatment sessions can vary according to the amount of submental fat and treatment response. Usually the best response is achieved after 3-6 sessions, 6-8 weeks apart.
How long will the results last?
While Kybella may not remove every fat cell, it does reduce and remove the fat cells that we are targeting and these cells will not return. After reaching the desired result, further treatment is not required.
What are the possible side effects?
The most common side effects include pain, swelling, redness, bruising, numbness and hardness. Kybella can also cause serious side effects like ulcers, necrosis, trouble swelling, and nerve injury.
